Cavities!
Can it be? Can she really have cavities? Yes. We took a trip to the dentist yesterday and Katie has two "typical suburban kid, I can fix these with my eyes closed" cavities (and yes, that was how he described them to me). She doesn't really understand what that means and was practically bragging to her friends at school today. I asked her how they responded and she said "they said, cool." Obviously none of these children have had any dental work done yet.
But the amazing thing is, our fantastic dentist has some state-of-the-art laser treatment that he can use to fix these cavities, so it really sounds like it's not that big of a deal anymore. He said basically all she will notice is him squirting water in her mouth. No shots, no drilling, no numb cheeks. And he can fix both of them at the same appt even though they are on different sides. Didn't we use to have to go for two appointments since they wouldn't numb your whole mouth? Well I say "we" assuming that everyone reading this has had cavities, but I know that's not true. I was a fortunate child in that I got to experience the filling process in ten of my teeth. Yes, you read that correctly.
But Katie's real fixation with her teeth is that she is convinced every day that one of her teeth has started to wiggle. I think she is using the power of positive thinking to will her baby teeth to fall out. Poor thing is either the youngest in her class or close to it at having just turned 5 in July and has several 7 year olds in her class who have already lost several teeth. So I told her that the best option for trying to loosen her teeth is to eat an apple every day. Apparently she listened because just now as I was giving her a slice of watermelon she said, "My favorite fruit is watermelon. And apples because they make my tooth loose! One time it did, it really did!"

Oh, Poor Katie!! But I guess times have changed! She is bragging about cavities! I guess it is good that she isn't scared about it.
Sounds like the dental visit went well. Taylor had one cavity on her first dental visit not too long ago and the dentist (a family member) told her that the sugar bugs had eaten a small hole in one of her teeth so she needs to brush better to make sure to get them out. She brushes every morning and night now usually without being asked! She even tells us that she brushes the insides of her teeth also now.
Don't worry Katie, those teeth will come out soon enough. You want to keep that full smile as long as you can!
Tyler wants a tooth to fall out so bad too. He has been eating an apple a day since school started!
Sophie has started talking about having a loose tooth (it's not loose, just wishful thinking on her part). I was an unlucky kid, and adult. I have so many cavities that it's not even funny. I keep my dentist in business.
I'm doing a giveaway on my blog, go check it out!
We have the same problem with Reagan--she's also the youngest in her class and has started wiggling her teeth. I think one is actually loose! Kaitlyn had her first cavity at 4! She was basically put to sleep and doesn't remember anything. Thank goodness for modern technology.
