Wordless Wednesday with a few words

Guess what I just saw right next to my neighborhood? For those of you in the area...these were taken at the stoplight at 242 and East Windvale...

Yup folks, it's a red fox. And he sat there long enough for me to drive by, go home and get my camera and go back. As soon as I pulled up he snuck back into the woods.

Wednesday Weigh-in

Greetings from the scales...again. The good news is I am still losing. I am down 1.2# since last week. The bad news is that my head is still not in the game. And I am only down 1.4# since starting this challenge. Nowhere near my goal of 5#. I am not taking this seriously AT ALL. I still am not exercising consistently. I am sort of watching what I eat, but mainly just at the beginning of the week. I have not had coke or pepsi in a while which is a good thing because when I ordered it twice this week it was disgusting to me and I ended up pouring it out. So I guess now I am officially giving up soft drinks, so that's a step in the right direction.

This weekend I am attending an Early Childhood Conference in San Marcos, TX. The good thing is there shouldn't be too many tempting places to eat - it's a pretty smallish town. But, I will be eating out for meals two and a half days, so that's never a good thing. I'm just going to have to be extra careful about what I order. It shouldn't be too hard, I'm rooming with two skinny minis, so that will keep me in check.

Now that I think about it, I did have the odds against me this week. I had free passes for girls night out TWO nights in a ROW last weekend. First I had book club on Friday night which included wine and dessert. And then GNO on Saturday night with the neighborhood girls which included wine, appetizers, more wine and dessert. I'm getting all my socializing in for the year this month apparently! This weekend is the conference with friends from work and next weekend is hubby's class reunion at Texas A&M. I guess we'll just have to be homebodies in February so I can lose some weight!

The New Look

Here's my interim facelift. It's not fancy and there's not a lot of graphics but it will do for now. I just can't really decide which direction to take it. A lot of people have cutesy titles that lend themselves to a theme, but I'm just not feeling it right now. But aren't the kids so adorable????

bX-yh6u4n

Has anyone out there gotten error codes similar to this one? bX-yh6u4n or bX4h0tgg?

I checked the google groups for blogger support and there aren't really any answers. I'm trying to upload a new template...header...change my widgets, ect. And IT WON'T LET ME!!! Grrr.

Do you ever walk in a room and just start shaking your head? I should have known when the dialogue went a little like this...

Me: Kyle, 5 more minutes and you're coming upstairs to rest.

Kyle: but Mom, I already pulled my pants down.

Me: what?

Kyle: I already pulled my pants down.

Me: Did you need to pull your pants down?

Kyle: nope. I just did.

I started walking down the stairs and found this:

Still am not sure what that was about. But he is now fully clothed. In other news, he pooped on the potty today! Hooray!

***************
Update -
I now know what it was about...took about 45 minutes but at least he's starting to get the idea that pants go down. Now if he'd just remember the "I need to sit on the potty" part. Good thing I redressed him!

Facelift

I am so ready for a facelift for my blog. But, I do not have the time or money to devote to that right now so you'll have to just keep looking at my outdated photos and my tired floral background. I would love to hire someone to do a major overhaul on the site, but at the same time I know that I am more than capable of tackling that job on my own. I just don't have the time or energy to take that on right now. But as I browse other blogs I think that I really should update the look. So maybe I'll go out and search for a new free template and locate some more recents photos of the kids. Or I'll just pretend like I did that and decide that what I have is fine.

This Day

This day did not go as I had planned. Not that I had a lot planned, but there were things I should have gotten done or needed to get done, but didn't do. This morning when dropping Katie off at school, Kyle went into his normal whining fit about wanting to stay at school. He LOVES school which is a good thing, but he's only signed up to be at school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. So every Monday or Friday that I take Katie to school he gets really upset that he can't stay. A couple of months ago I inquired and found out that his class is full on Mondays and Fridays so there was no point in even asking if I could enroll him another day.

So this morning we dropped Katie off, went and signed her in and then headed over to my classroom. I had decided that I would pick up some posterboard that I had asked my assistant to paint for me for next week. I knew she wouldn't have time to get to it today so I figured I'd paint it today at home. For some reason Kyle cannot handle going into my classroom when there are other kids there. He turns into a little monster and decides to destroy anything in his path. I was planning a quick walk across the room, pick up the posterboard and walk out. I didn't want to interrupt the class as they were beginning their day. Unfortunately I was asked where a project was so I had to start digging through files which left Kyle unattended in the block center. He started dumping big cardboard blocks all over the floor and then kicking them. Then for some unknown reason he picked up two of the blocks, put them under his arms and ran out the door. He went through the cafeteria and onto the other hallway before I caught up to him. I tried to be a good mom and I made him go back and clean up the mess he had made. As soon as the blocks were picked up he tore out the door again. Luckily I was finished and I went after him. I tried to be calm and patient calling after him. But this time he made it to the hallway on his way to the Kindergarten room (Katie's classroom). When I saw where he was going I started running after him trying to be careful not to drop the two posterboards I was carrying while my purse is banging on my shoulder. The next thing I hear as I round the corner is "well, Hi Kyle!", a cheerful greeting from Katie's teacher as I skid to a stop, grab his arm and drag him out of the room. Oh, embarrassment. He's in tears. I'm flustered because this is where I work afterall and what do you think about a teacher who cannot handle her own child? I drag him out to the parking lot where the morning care teacher sees us and greets him. The next thing I know she is telling me to leave him at school because she only has 4 children today and he can stay in her class (which is right next door to his regular class). Oh Bless You! I end up going in to let my boss know that he will be staying today which she says is fine and then I head to my car to run off and pick him up some lunch.

When I got back to drop off his lunch I overheard something that had absolutely nothing to do with me, but of course the way my brain works I can turn anything into something I did wrong. I overheard my boss talking to the teacher that had offered to keep Kyle and that made me think she was getting in trouble for letting me leave him there. Of course I know this is nonsense, she could have been talking about ANYTHING, but the seed was planted in my head. I stewed over it for hours thinking that I was wrong in leaving him there rather than enjoying the blessing of an extra day to myself this week.

And what did I do with the extra day? Not much. Laundry, shower, some website work and painted the rainbow for my Noah's Ark center next week. At least I got one thing done that I had planned! There were so many things I could have been doing, but I wasn't in the mood. I needed to clean my kitchen. I needed to vacuum. I needed to make a doctor's appt for Kyle and a dentist appt for me. I needed to go grocery shopping. I should have gone to work out. By lunchtime I was so overwhelmed with trying to decide what I wanted to do and worrying about leaving Kyle when it wasn't his day that I ended up going shopping to distract myself...but not grocery shopping which is something I needed to do. The good news is, I didn't buy any clothes. I decided that I didn't want to buy any clothes right now because you know I'm losing weight and all and pretty soon I should be down another size. Right???

By 1:30 I was back at school. I found some things to work on (laminating posters and using the die cut machine) but I was a full hour early for picking up the little guy. I ended up going into my boss's office and just flat out asking her if she really was okay with me leaving him on a day I wasn't supposed to. She looked at me and said, "well, you really didn't let yourself enjoy the gift that Sharon gave you, did you?" Um no. Then she called me a stupidhead and started laughing at me. I deserved that. But at least now I can relax the next time I leave him on one of his "off days"...which Sharon said I could do any Monday or Friday that I needed to. Thank God!

An Issue

KP: "Mom, I'm standing on my chair because I think I have [pause] an issue." [he points to his bottom]

"let me see; yup, you have an issue."

K8: "you should have seen the issue I had today."

Where did this "issue" thing come from????

Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Right?

So here we are again at another weigh-in for the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans challenge Looking Fine for Valentines. Last week I told you that my head is not in the game. It's still a little accurate, but I have been at least putting forth a little more effort this week. Unfortunately I hosted a party on Saturday, attended another party on Sunday and drank this weekend. So I kind of skipped the weekend again - had chips and dip, margaritas, cake, etc. All the things I LOVE and should not eat. I did great on Monday, went to work out, ate well, etc. But then Tuesday comes around and I go back to work and back to bad habits. If we could just take Tuesdays and the weekends out of my week then maybe I'd be doing better!

My other mental stumbling block is that dear sweet hubby mentioned this weekend that he has dropped 28lbs. Seriously?!?! I knew he had lost some weight, but 28lbs? I am very proud of him but at the same time insanely jealous and ticked off. Why does it seem so effortless for him and so difficult for me? Don't get me wrong - I'm not ticked off at him. Just ticked off. And what happens when I get ticked off? I eat. I know I need to put down the fork and move, but food is my comfort and that's where I turn. I'm not excusing myself, just hopefully saying it will help me break that cycle.

I still lost this week which is good, I just didn't lose as much as I had hoped. I'm down 0.8# from last week. Baby steps...that's all I committed to when I started this. And now I'm off to go walking.

Wow - I really have to post just to get that awful picture down a little further!

Our weekend was good. We hosted Kyle's 3rd birthday party on Saturday. We had a few friends and family and I had a few margaritas! I'm very proud of myself that I did not overdo this party...which I usually tend to do! There's a twinge of guilt at not making quite as big a deal out of Kyle's birthday that I have in the past for Katie, but I think the reality of it is that he is 3 and he doesn't know any different AND he had a great time. We got out our little jump house that I bought a few years ago and it was the perfect size for the five kids who were here. We had train sets out for them to play with and they basically had the run of the house. Today was his actual birthday and probably the biggest treat he had was the Katie fell asleep at 6pm (after playing outside with the neighbors for quite a while) so he got to eat dinner with Mommy and Daddy all by himself. We gave him one more cupcake and sang Happy Birthday. Then he sang Happy Birthday to us too! What a sweetie.

Today was a LOOOONNNNGGG day. It was a holiday which was nice because I didn't have to worry about getting Katie to school or getting Kyle down for a nap at a certain time, but for some reason it just seemed long. We didn't get out the door to run our errands until after 11 which was part of the problem. I just had too much going on around the house - balance the checkbook, laundry, pick up toys, take a shower, etc - that we did not get out the door to run our few errands when I would have liked to. So by the time we got to Target and Kroger it was past lunchtime and the natives were getting restless. We got home about 1pm and Kyle ate lunch and then took a nap while Katie watched HSM 2. Once Kyle woke up I was planning to go to the playground for about 45 minutes but we noticed the neighbors out playing down the street so we trekked down there. I'm glad we went, but we were out for much longer than I had planned. Katie had an attitude when we got back so she was sent to her room for 5 minutes where she promptly fell asleep...and has been asleep since. After dinner I realized that I was a bit stressed out from my day so sweet hubby took over the bath/bed duties and I went to work out. I feel great now. I'm so glad that I took the time to exercise. Now if I could just get confident enough to actually run on the treadmill. Why is that so scary to me? I tried to do it and lasted about 10 seconds before I had to slow it back down. I guess I don't really know how fast to pace myself. Any tips would be appreciated. Now that I think about it I think it's scary because when I was in jr high I remember a friend who fell off his parents treadmill and it just sounded awful. Hopefully I can get past this fear because it's just a tad too cold outside for me to go running out there.

Am I really doing this?

Here's Two Tags for the Price of One...

My friend Lisa as Growing Up Mo' tagged me for this photo shoot and...

Here are the rules:
1) Take a picture of yourself right NOW!
2) DON'T change your clothes; DON'T fix your hair... Just take a picture.
3) Post that picture with NO editing.
4) Post these instructions with your picture.
5) Tag 10 people to do this.

So, here it is...

Also, Tim over at Fort Thompson tagged me a few days ago for 6 Random Things About Me:

Here are the rules:1) Link to the person who tagged you.2) Post the rules on your blog (copy and paste 1-6).3) Write 6 random things about yourself.4) Tag 6 people at the end of your post and link to them.5) Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.6) Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

6 Random Things About Me:
1. My ears are not identical; one is indented and the other really isn't.
2. I can sing the names of the 50 states in alphabetical order.
3. My first car was a 1961 VW beetle. Said car broke down all the time leaving me stranded or knocking on people's front doors for help...back when cell phones were big bricks and very few people actually had them.
4. I was raised in the suburbs of what was then West Houston and we had chickens and ducks as pets.
5. I played the flute in junior high and the piano for a while too.
6. I recently "lost" one of my first houseplants - a ficus treee that I bought my Sophomore year in college when it was about 10" tall. It grew to about 3ft and has moved homes 8 times. This summer it would have been 15 years old. So sad. I laid it to rest in my flower bed out back which means I tossed it outside a few weeks ago and it probably froze two nights ago, so if it wasn't really dead yet, now it is. Tiffanie - I bought that plant when we lived in the scary apt after the sorority house.

So I guess now I have to tag people. I guess I'll let you off the hook and let you decide which tag you want to participate in - photo shoot or random thoughts - but you know, you'll win lots of bloggy points if you do both! Oh, and I'm going with tagging only 6 people because I'm still feeling fairly freshmanlike in the blogosphere.

1. Tiffanie at Manic Mommy Musings

2. Jennifer at Uzmann Updates

3. Amy at Tennisballs and Ladybugs

4. Gayla at Life in Doha, Qatar

5. Jill at And A Bartlett in a Pear Tree...

6. Laurie at Storch Stuff

Have fun and let me know when your post is up!

Not in the Game

Well today is the first official weigh-in of our newest challenge over at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. And I have officially decided that I want to rewind 24 hours and use THAT weigh-in. Because YESTERDAY I was down a pound from where I started last week. But today, I'm up .6# from where I started last week.

As I stated above, my head is not in the game this week. I don't have any particular reason other than I have been thinking more about what I need to get done around here in preparations for someone's birthday party this weekend rather than on what I am putting in my mouth. So I've been sitting on the sidelines all week just hoping that my name wouldn't be called to stand on the scale and face up to what I've been trying to ignore. Like I said, I weighed myself on Tuesday and was REALLY happy. Mommy Mo challenged me to get off the couch and start moving, so I went out and ran on Monday night. Now it's not like I ran far, but I got my body moving (and it still hurts) which is what is important. I also ate fine on Monday, but pretended that the weekend didn't count. Yesterday I planned to take my lunch to work but in the chaos of the morning it got left in the refrigerator...and I succumbed to peer pressure when it came to going out to get lunch. In my haste, I failed to select something less harmful to my body and I chose one of the worst things on the menu. Oh well. It's a new week, right???

Katie: "Mom, can I PLEASE have eggs for dinner tomorrow night? [pause and a sigh] It has been so hard for ME now that Kyle has an allergy"

Oh you poor thing!

At the breakfast table this morning I said more than once, "Oatmeal is NOT a finger food." and I wasn't just talking to Kyle...

In other news, I just returned from the grocery store where I located the frozen food section...no, not that frozen food section - the allergy-free/organic/natural/vegan frozen food section, which was on the opposite side of the store as the regular frozen food section. How I have missed that the past 5 times I have shopped there is beyond me. The good news is that I found more frozen waffles (regular this time instead of flax, so hopefully he will enjoy them a little more), blueberry muffins and donuts!!! So sorry for the grocery bill, honey! If any of you out there have ever shopped gluten-free or any other specialty food item you know that it costs 3x the amount of regular food. But it's his birthday week and he's having the $8 donuts!

Have a great Wednesday!

CPSIA - what?

Have you ever bought a used toy from a friend, made a trip to Kid-to-Kid or some other resale shop, accepted a handmade burp cloth or other handmade baby item? Or do you make some of these items or sell your kids clothes and toys to resale shops or in garage sales? Then you need to hop on over here to this post on Rocks in My Dryer and read about the CPSIA law that will go into effect on Feb 10, 2009.

*Update

I noticed this post in the comments section, so I guess it doesn't apply to the used items anymore, but still the new handmade ones:
There have been some changes and clarifications because of the outcry (some info can be found here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09086.html and here: http://familyclassroom.net/BookBan0210.html) but at this point, though the law no longer affects sellers of used articles (though they are NOT allowed to resell anything that has been recalled--which means keeping up to date with THAT mess) it still affects those who MAKE new items, and is still a problem. posted by Heather on Sunday, January 11, 2009

Muffins!

So a few weeks ago I think I mentioned that I was planning to make Kyle some gluten-free muffins (I would link to it, but I can't find it...guess I'll start using labels!) and whatever recipe I was planning to use called for butter, but I didn't have any. I ended up putting all the dry ingredients in a ziploc baggie and putting it in the pantry. Problem is I couldn't figure out where the recipe came from and no other muffin recipes I did find called for butter. I also promptly forgot what I put in the dry ingredients since it was a mixture of several different types of flours, baking powder, sugar, etc. I honestly don't know. So today I did a quick goodle search for some gf muffins and happened upon Karina's Kitchen recipe for Brown Sugar Blueberry Muffins. I did some quick measuring to figure out how much of the dry ingredients I had, added some brown sugar, cinnamon and allspice and then followed the rest of the recipe...sort of. I didn't have applesauce on hand, so I just used milk, oil and egg replacer. But the best part was she had this tip for the egg replacer which I think will do wonders for any cakes I make from now on. Instead of just using water with the egg replacer, she uses club soda, olive oil and xanthum gum. Of course I didn't have any club soda on hand so I substituted what I did have on hand that was bubbly and clear - Sprite! They turned out so yummy. I know I didn't follow this recipe really at all, but it gave me some help in figuring out where to go from what I had. Kyle asked for seconds! And yes there are blueberries in there - they all ended up in the bottom of the muffins, but they still taste so good.

Short and Sweet or is it Sweet and Sassy?

Not feeling very bloggy tonight, but you can check out how Katie spent last night over here...Taylor's blog. Tonight she was konked out on the couch by 5:45pm. No dinner. No bath. No pjs. And after her grumpies today, no more sleepovers until summer. But she did enjoy the party last night. And if you click over to Fort Thompson, you'll see a cute picture of the girls pretending to be asleep.

Off to bed!

Top Drawer

My sweet hubby folded the laundry the other day. I remember him asking me about the cut up white t-shirt that I had mixed in with the towels. I explained that it was one of his old ones that I use for dusting since it's super soft and doesn't leave lint behind. So I just reached into the kitchen towel drawer to dry my hands and pulled out a pair of white cotton undies! Even funnier is that there were 2 pair in there!

Down with the Sistas

So today is the final weigh-in of the Dreaming of a Light Christmas Challenge that I signed up for with the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. The challenge began on December 1st and went through yesterday. So here's the skinny: last week I was up .2# and this week I am down .2#, so I am back to where I was two weeks ago. My overall loss for the Challenge was 5.1#. I set my original goal at 5# which I honestly thought was nuts to try to lose over the holidays. But I did it!

I signed up for Weight Watchers online a few weeks ago, but I honestly have not been following it. I have found that it makes me neurotic trying to track points and I that I really do better when I just make an effort to pay attention to what is going in my mouth. I have also found that if I make lunch my big meal I usually do better. So that's when I usually eat the most calories. I will confess though that this morning I stopped for donuts on the way to school because we were super late and Katie had not eaten. We have not had donuts in MONTHS due to Kyle's wheat and egg allergies so I indulged. Maybe it was my reward for completing the challenge...nah, it was really that I had not eaten a donut in months and I wanted one. But I am really proud of us for not having them for so long because we used to
be the family that got donuts almost every Sunday.

I'll definitely be signing up for the next Challenge! Want to join us??? Just head over to Shrinking Jeans tomorrow and see what they have in store for us.

May the Force Be With You

Tonight in the bathtub Kyle accidentally broke a bug catcher cage that we got a while back at a birthday party. The plastic door started to tear off. I thought for sure he was going to say that we could go to Target and get another one, but instead he looked at me and said very slowly "maybe we can go and get me a light saber now." I asked if that would fix it and he said, "we can shoot it!"

Guess what he is longing for when he turns 3???

No More Tears!

Do you ever catch yourself spewing words out of your mouth and you can't stop them but you know that you don't want to be saying them and you don't intend to be saying them but they just keep coming? Ugh. And even when you know that you don't want to say them, you don't stop? Why do we do the things we don't want to do??? We end up hurting those we love without intending to, scaring (and scarring) our children for no apparent reason and getting all worked up over nonsense.

The nonsense in my house this evening was bathtime. I think the reason I 'lost it' was because we've had a little trouble with bathtime the past few nights and I have had it. If there had been a hose in my bathroom I would have just turned it on high and sprayed them down and been done with it. Unfortunately there is no fire hose in my bathroom. First they fought over Dora and Diego. Why those toys tonight I don't know - they haven't played with the Dora and Diego bath toys in MONTHS. Then Katie decides to lay down and gets in Kyle's way. I told her to sit up but she didn't listen. He pulled her hair. So the tears start flowing. 10 minutes later she still hadn't gotten her hair wet...after I had said it three (or more) times. So I give her some shampoo and she spends 5 minutes lathering up her hands and then forgets that it's for her hair and rinses her hands off. That's when Mommy lost it. I ended up shampooing her hair - she got a really good shampoo - the kind you get at the salon where they get it really soapy and work it in with their nails. I think it kind of scared her because she started crying. I'm pretty sure the reason bathtime ended last night without clean hair was because she started crying. Oh and the night before too. We've had lots of tears during bathtime this week. Mommy is tired of all the crying!

So Mommy had to leave and turned the chaos over to Daddy who handled it very well. Thank you for my sanity break...

I Resolve...

I know, I know a few days ago I said I don't make resolutions anymore, but...it seems that without intending to I have made a few and I know there are more that I should make. So here I will publicly acknowledge them so that I have a record to look back at next year.

1. I resolve to declutter my house. This has been a HUGE benefit to us in the past week as we have started selling and giving away all those things we thought we NEEDED that really just sat around for no reason. So far in the past week Derek has cleaned out all three attics. The only thing left in one of them is our Christmas decorations which makes sense since there is really no where else to store those items. Granted, our garage is now completely full of junk that we have to go through. Today I took an entire carload (my SUV) full of items to Goodwill including toys, clothes, stereo equipment, books and household items. That felt really good (especially giving away the toys that just sit around).

2. I resolve to keep my house picked up (at least the public areas!). This is going to be a challenge for me, but I'm hoping that the few small changes we have made lately will help. The kids know that if they leave toys out before they go to bed, they will lose those toys for a week. I can't say that our bedroom and closet will always be neat because that seems to have turned into the dumping ground when company comes over. But as we declutter it will become simpler to keep things tidy.

3. I resolve to be conscious about the food and drinks I put into my body. I've noticed over the past few weeks that I am really not good at Weight Watchers, but I have still lost weight. The problem is that I don't keep track of my points and I have no desire to keep track of my points. But what I have found is that if I think about what I am eating and how I will feel a)right now, b)in an hour and c)tomorrow morning if I should step on the scale, that will usually help me make better choices about what is going into my mouth. There are some days when I just don't care or I am in a situation like last night where all there was to eat was pizza and beer, so I just have to make up for it the next day.

4. I resolve to use cash as much as possible. With the new year came a new budget for our household. We have set a few goals for ourselves this year and with that comes tightening up and saving as much as possible. That also means teaching myself not to pull out the debit card everytime I am at a check-out. I started to this afternoon at Target (yes, I have started shopping at Target again occasionally) and stopped myself before it slid all the way out of the pocket. Yea me!

5. I resolve to spend more quality time with my kids. I have neglected the simple things this past year - going to the park, taking them for walks, playing games at home.

So there it is. I think those are the types of resolutions I can keep...we'll have to wait and see about keeping the house picked up though!

I skipped it...

Let's see I could say that it was an accident that I didn't post or weigh-in yesterday, but that wouldn't be truthful. I actually did weigh-in but I wasn't satisfied with the results so I chose not to check in with the sisters. But I have decided that what is done, is done and I am only lying to myself if I don't. I gained .2lbs, yes there is a point in front of that 2, so it's really not that big of a deal but I still wasn't happy about it. It didn't help that I ate king ranch chicken for dinner the night before.

So today we start fresh right? Well I don't usually keep my resolutions so a few years back I resolved not to make New Year's Resolutions anymore. And that's one that I have kept. I am continuing on my journey to a more healthful body, 5lbs at a time. Sadly today I have hindered that journey more than helped it. I made broccoli rice casserole...and since I had to break open that big hunk of velveeta I thought I'd go ahead and make some queso too. I also am on a quest to find the best wheat-free, egg-free cake for Kyle, so I made a small cake today. After one piece I decided it was not birthday cake worthy, so hopefully the kids and Derek can polish it off without me. It's not worth me taking any more bites of it so I'm not too worried about that. But I feel really blah right now. When I think about what I have put into my mouth today it really grosses me out too. Chips, cheese, butter frosting, cake, triscuits and hummus. No wonder I feel like there's a brick in my stomach. I think I'll start fresh tomorrow.

Happy New Year!
